One of the best phones of 2019 that a lot of people in the U.S. probably weren't even aware of was the You must be registered for see links. The P30 Pro impressed on a lot of levels, whether we're talking about its incredible cameras or never-ending battery life.

With big shoes to fill for itself, Huawei thinks it has a proper successor on its hands with the P40 Pro. The camera is another focal point for the phone, along with an eye-catching display, a huge battery, and plenty more to get excited about.

If you're eager to learn more about the P40 Pro (or its two siblings, the P40 and P40 Pro+), keep on reading for everything you need to know!

    We've gone hands-on with the P40 Pro

Right off the bat, we recommend you start by reading our hands-on preview of the Huawei P40 Pro. We still need more time to test the phone before we're ready to publish a full review, but after using the phone for around 36 hours, AC's Daniel Bader whipped up some initial thoughts about it.

Simply put, the Huawei P40 Pro has a lot of good things going for it. The OLED display is nice and crisp thanks to a 2640 x 1200 resolution, which is made even better thanks to a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. The battery is also nice and big, coming in at 4,200 mAh.

Just like the P30 Pro, however, the big draw to the P40 Pro is its camera system. The four rear cameras create for tons of shooting possibilities, and early results are quite impressive.

Unfortunately, as wonderful as all of that is, the P40 Pro cannot escape the harsh reality of shipping without Google services. That's not a huge issue for folks in China, but if you happen to import the P40 Pro into North America, you'll be in for a headache-inducing time.

    There are three models — P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro+

Huawei's P40 family consists of three entries, the first of which is the regular P40. This is the phone to get if you want that P40 experience without completely blowing your budget, and at first glance, the phone has all of the makings to do just that.

The display is relatively compact at 6.1-inches, offering a slightly lower resolution of 2340 x 1080. It's powered by Huawei's flagship Kirin 990 processor, is paired with 8GB of RAM, and has 128GB of storage. Rounding out the phone is a 3,800 mAh battery, and IP53 water resistance rating, and wired charging up to 22.5W.

Huawei included a lot of its camera prowess with the base P40, most notably by offering the same 50MP primary camera. It's rounded out with an 8MP telephoto camera and 16MP ultra-wide camera.

Speaking of the P40 Pro, this is the middle-child of the family and will likely be the most popular. The processor and RAM are exactly the same, but you get a larger 6.58-inch display, 2640 x 1200 resolution, and the refresh rate is increased from 60Hz to 90Hz. We also see upgrades to 256GB of storage, a 4,200 mAh battery, IP68 dust/water resistance rating, and 40W wired charging with support for 27W wireless charging.

On the camera front, the P40 Pro is where we're introduced to Huawei's 12MP SuperSensing Telephoto camera which should allow for impressive close-up shots. There's also the 40MP Cine Camera and 3D depth sensor, giving you even more data for your photos.

Last but certainly not least, we need to talk about the P40 Pro+. This is essentially the exact same phone as the P40 Pro, but with 512GB of storage, an extra telephoto camera, and a sleek ceramic finish to tie the whole package together.

The price increase between the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ likely isn't worth it for most people (more on that below), but if you want the highest-end smartphone Huawei has to offer right now, the P40 Pro+ is for you.

    Here are all the specs

Yes, the hole punch is huge

You must be registered for see links

The Huawei P40 Pro has a pretty great design, but there's simply no getting around the massive hole punch cutout for the dual front-facing cameras. This is one of the larger hole punches we've seen in a while, and in all honesty, it's not very flattering. However, if you're one for taking selfies, it could be worth the added space.

All three phones feature a 32MP primary sensor for the selfie camera, with the P40 offering an IR camera and the P40 Pro/P40 Pro+ touting a depth camera.

We certainly wish Huawei could have found a way to make the cutout more pleasing to the eye, but for anyone that's serious about selfies or vlogging, there's ample tech here to keep you happy.

Huawei's placing all bets on its camera system

You must be registered for see links

On the subject of cameras, it's about time we fully address what's going on with the back of the P40 Pro.

The 50MP primary camera captures images at a resolution of 12MP, and in doing so, takes data from the other two cameras, analyzes different frames, stacks these together, and finally gives you the end result. Combine that with improvements to low-light photography and autofocus, and the P40 Pro is capable of capturing some rather pretty shots.

In our testing so far, we've been very pleased with the P40 Pro's camera performance. Pictures of people come out with more natural colors than the P30 Pro, the ultrawide camera is vastly improved, and photos taken with the 5x telephoto mode look outstanding.

You'll find more samples in our hands-on preview, but the above pictures should give you a fairly good idea of what to expect.

You won't find any Google apps

You must be registered for see links

Coming off that high note, we do need to address the Google apps situation. Or should I say, the lack thereof. Just like the Huawei Mate 30, the entire P40 family ships without any sort of Google tie-ins. That means no Google Play, YouTube, Gmail, etc. installed on the phone out of the box.

While that does sound like a massive roadblock (and it is), Huawei is doing what it can to make the best of a bad situation. There's a Phone Clone app that allows you to transfer apps from an existing Android phone over to the P40, along with Huawei's AppGallery for downloading new applications.

It's possible to use the P40 and get everything done that you need to, but even if you're moderately engrained in the Google ecosystem, switching over to a phone with no connection to the Mothership is going to come with a big learning curve.

The phones launch on April 7

You must be registered for see links

Lastly, let's talk pricing and availability. Huawei is launching the P40 family on April 7, with the phones heading to "selected markets."

The regular P40 is the cheapest of the bunch, coming in at €799. If you want to upgrade to the P40 Pro, it'll set you back €999. The P40 Pro+ in all of its ceramic glory is selling for a cool €1399.

Huawei won't be selling the phones officially in the U.S. anytime soon, but it should be fairly easy to import them into the country if that's something you're interested in doing.

    Focus on what matters

One look at the Huawei P40 Pro is all it takes to understand what this phone is about — photography. With a quad-camera array on the back and a plethora of shooting modes, the P40 Pro stands to go toe-to-toe with the best of them. On top of that, you're also treated to a big OLED display, 256GB of storage, and a 4,200 mAh battery.
